飛行機の中でメールを送受信するという事

とにかく、TJと共に東京行きのキャセイに乗り込んだ。目的は皆さんご存知のように新宿の隠れ家に届いているSony VAIOUを受けとるのがその理由だ。これ以外の理由なんて色々あと付けで作っているが、本当は無い！
もちろん、昨夜は行き着けのすし屋で、息を吸いすぎたカエルのお腹のような状態になるまで食べた、もう苦しいのである。しかも、ホテルの近くのコンビニでやっぱり、シュークリームを買ってしまった。
R50pを持ってきたのは、この飛行機の中からのメールを送受信してみたいからだ。ファーストかビジネスではどこに着席してもこのサービスを受けられるのだがエコノミーは前から4番目までの席までがこのサービスを受けられると説明を受けた。
今回の旅行は、仕事ではないからあまりお金をかけたくないし、東京までなら、ビジネスなんて乗りたくない。だから、エコノミーの前をお願いした。キャセイのスッチーにUSBケーブルを渡され、これで、PCと座席の下についているUSBハブに接続した。
TenjinというUSBモデムなるソフトをインストールし、とにかく、接続を試みる。
こんな調子で、接続が行われている事が確認できる。
専用のウェブメーラーが立ち上がり、メールの送受信が行われるのだ。
飛行機の中からの通信という事で、20分に一度メールの送受信が行われる。（多分、そのくらいのタイミングと思う。）
料金は、二通りのプランがあり、一通毎に料金がかかる。基本は一通2KBまでで、これがUS9ドルちょっと。あるいは、2KBまでのメールならば、無制限というプランで、19ドルちょっと。（細かい数字を覚えていなくってごめんナ！）。
メールは、2KB以上は切り捨てられて、それ以上を受信するのであれば追加料金が必要となる。実は、ISLの会計マギーから、添付ファイルが送られてきたが、受信すると、US＄1000ドル近くかかるらしい。計算方法は1KB当たりUS$0.60との事である。いくら人柱隊でも二通のメール受信に10万円をかけるのはできない。しかし、この数字を見た瞬間ちょっとびびったのである。そりゃ、プラン通りで、2KBのメールなら、いくら受信しても19ドル程度以上かからないと書いてあるが、それにしても、「もし、チャージされたら」という気持ちが頭をよぎったのである。何度も、PricePlansを読みなおして、胸をなでおろした。
Unlimited Messages
For one low flat fee per flight, you automatically receive all your messages up to a standard amount of kBs per individual message. Since some messages may be longer than the standard, we provide an easy way for you to manage these longer emails. At the point where the standard amount ends, we ask you if you would like to receive and pay for the remainder of the message. We tell you just how much the remainder will cost, and then you decide to upload/order it or not.
Attachments also incur a per kB charge. We indicate in advance the cost of the whole attachment, and then you decide to purchase and view it, or not.
The process for sending messages is similar to receiving them. After you compose a message, we again tell you in advance how much that message will cost to send. Anything up to the standard amount of kBs is included in the flat fee. Note that 1kB equals 1,024 bytes.
Promotions Your ISP may occasionally hold special promotions. To take advantage of the promotion during your flight, you enter the special promotional code your ISP provides, but you will not see the reduction in price until after the flight, when you are billed and the promotional rate is applied. Normal (non-promotional) pricing is displayed during the flight.

このメーラーはUTF8（ユニコード）で行われるので、日本語で送信したメールは化けて読めない可能性もある。まだまだ、このようなサービスには改善の余地があると感じた。自分のメーラーで送受信が出来るようになれば、存在意義はあると思う。所で、このフライトでこのサービスを使っているのはバスターだけだったのだ。
